Energy-savings possibilities in the refrigeration systems of the food industry in Catalonia (Spain).

Summary

In 1991, energy audits were carried out in different sectors of the food industry. The following energy-saving possibilities in refrigeration systems were revealed: 21% in cold storage, 20% in the meat industry, 2.7% in the milk industry and 15% in the alcoholic beverage industry. These possibilities were based on the following improvements: computer control of the refrigeration system, evaporative condensers, automatic defrosting, electronic humidifiers, ice accumulation with high-performance systems (in the milk factories) and heat recovery from refrigeration systems.
