Cryogenic insulation of tankers: the success of membrane systems.
Isolation cryogénique des méthaniers : succès des systèmes à membranes.
Author(s) : DANMANVILLE A.
Type of article: Article, Review
Summary
This article briefly recapitulates the stages that led French engineering to become a major player in this sector by developing and harnessing so-called membrane technology, i.e. the construction of large tanks with dual insulated lining the shape of the tanker shell. It gives details on the 3 available techniques of cryogenic membrane insulation, while specifying the regulatory framework. Finally, it looks to the future by presenting a cryogenic submarine, Pluto II, modelled on membrane technology. Pluto II could replace current loading/ unloading docks and thus enhance the efficiency of the LNG chain while protecting the coastal environment.
