IN THE FERTILIZER INDUSTRY CRYOGENIC INSULATIONS ARE PROVIDED IN LIQUID AIR SEPARATION PLANT AND NITROGEN WASH UNITS. THESE PLANTS OPERATE IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 77 TO 90 K AT NORMAL TO HIGH PRESSURES. WIDE VARIETIES OF THERMAL INSULATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE WORLD MARKET FOR CRYOGENIC SERVICE, BUT UNTIL RECENTLY MOSTLY EXPANDED PERLITE IS USED TO INSULATE THESE UNITS IN INDIA. THE CORROSION AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS INVOLVED IN USING THIS MATERIAL HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED WITH CASE STUDIES, IN ACTUAL PLANT ENVIRONMENT. THE REASONS FOR THESE HAZARDS ARE CRITICALLY DISCUSSED IN THIS PAPER. MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS ARE ALSO POINTED OUT.
