CRYOLOGY: A SURVEY OF RECENT ADVANCES.

Author(s) : TIMMERHAUS K. D.

Summary

THE RECENT DISCOVERY OF CERAMIC MATERIALS HAS STIMULATED WORLDWIDE INTEREST IN THIS PHENOMENON AND REVIVED INTEREST IN THE MANY APPLICATIONS (SUPERCONDUCTING GENERATORS AND MOTORS, NO-LOSS POWER TRANSMISSION LINES, ENHANCED MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING DEVICES AND SEPARATORS, HIGH-SPEED MAGLEV TRAINS, FASTER AND MORE COMPACT COMPUTERS). BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT THAT THESE RECENT ADVANCES COULD HAVE ON ALL OF CRYOLOGY, A MAJOR PORTION OF THE SURVEY IS DEVOTED TO THESE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS. HOWEVER, THE SURVEY SELECTIVELY NOTES A FEW OF ADVANCES IN LOW TEMPERATURE TECHNOLOGY: CRYOCOOLER DEVELOPMENTS FOR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING FACILITIES, VERIFICATION OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETIC ENERGY STORAGE CONCEPT, ADVANCES IN MICROTURBINE EXPANDERS, IMPROVEMENTS IN HEAT EXCHANGERS.
