Summary

THE ELABORATION OF METHODS FOR CRYOPRESERVATION OF EMBRYOS FROM LABORATORY AND FARM ANIMALS HAS GREATLY EXTENDED THE POSSIBILITIES FOR EMBRYO TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY. FREEZING OF EMBRYOS WAS CARRIED OUT BY MODIFYING THE < TWO STEPS > PROCEDURE OF LEHN-JENSEN ET AL. STRAWS WERE PLACED IN AN AUTOMATIC FREEZER AND COOLED BY 1 K/MIN TO 266 K (-7 DEG C). SEEDING WAS INDUCED AND FREEZING CONTINUED AT A RATE OF 0.3 K/MIN TO 238 K (-35 DEG C) BEFORE BEING PLUNGED DIRECTL O LN2. FIRSTREPORTS ON TRANSFER OF FROZEN-THAWED SHEEP EMBRYOS HAVE SHOWN LOWER SURVIVAL RATE (13.3%) COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE TWO-STEP FREEZING PROCEDURE (40%) USED IN THIS STUDY. C. B.
