CRYOPRESERVATION OF BLOOD CELLS IN THE GDR-TRANSFUSION SERVICE.

Author(s) : TOURSEL W.

Summary

LIQUID NITROGEN IS WIDELY USED FOR THE LONG-TERM PRESERVATION AND THE PREPARATION OF PURE RED BLOOD CELL CONCENTRATES WITH A LYMPHOCYTE CONTENT LOWER THAN 1%. THE CRYOPRESERVATION OF RED BLOOD CELLS AT 248 K (-25 DEG C) IS VALID FOR MORE THAN 6 MONTHS AND ALSO FOR SOME PREPARATIONS. CRYOPRESERVED RED BLOOD CELLS ARE TRANSFUSED TO PATIENTS IN ORDER TO PREVENT REACTIONS OR SUBSEQUENT IMMUNISATION. THEY ARE ALSO TRANSFUSED PRIOR TO BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION OR AFTER SOME TRANSPLANTATIONS (EG KIDNEY). RED BLOOD CELLS OF VERY RARE BLOOD GROUPS ARE STORED IN LIQUID NITROGEN.
