Summary

A method that permits efficient handling and storage of a large number of algal strains has been developed to cryopreserve the algae in the collection. Each culture is grown, prepared for freezing, cryopreserved, thawed and shipped on the same agar slant in a 2 millilitre cryotube. A reliable method of quantifying the survival rate on the agar slants after freezing and thawing utilizes the observation that algal cells killed by the freeze-thaw process lose all chlorophyll after 2 days illumination.
