Cryopreservation of fish semen: a review.

Author(s) : MAISSE G.

Summary

In spite of good results in experimental conditions, cryopreservation of fish semen is not much used yet in practice mainly because the results are low and vary too widely. After freezing and thawing plasma membrane and mitochondria are often damaged, and mobility of spermatozoa is particularly affected. Various extenders have been studied. The fertilization medium must be adapted to each species. The semen concentration in the fertilization solution should be multiplied ten fold when frozen sperm is used. It seems that semen of marine fish is more resistant than that of freshwater species. The high variability observed especially with Rainbow trout sperm is mainly related with the quality of the membrane which can be connected to ageing.
