Summary

A PREVIOUS PAPER DESCRIBED A TECHNIQUE FOR THE STORAGE OF HUMAN PLATELETS IN PVC PACKS AT 193 K (-80 DEG C) WITH 0.5 MOLAR GLYCEROL. THE STORAGE PERIOD WAS UP TO 70 HOURS AND POST-THAW PROCESSING OF SMALL ALIQUOTS OF THE THAWED MATERIAL WAS CARRIED OUT IN POLYSTYRENE CONTAINERS. THE PAPER REPORTS A SMALL, BUT SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN RECOVERY AFTER 6 MONTHS STORAGE USING THE SAME PROCESSING METHODS, AND AN ADDITIONAL LOSS WHEN PROCESSING WAS CARRIED OUT IN PVC BLOOD PACKS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A HIGHER CONCENTRATION OF GLYCEROL, A LOWER STORAGE TEMPERATURE AND/OR OTHER PLASTIC CONTAINERS MAY BE PREFERABLE.
