Summary

CRYOPRESERVATION OF PLATELET CONCENTRATES OFFERS THE POTENTIAL FOR EXTENDED STORAGE OF PLATELETS FOR TRANSFUSION. THE IDEAL CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENT SHOULD MAINTAIN THE FUNCTIONAL INTEGRITY OF THE PLATELETS DURING THE STRESS OF FREEZING AND THAWING, AND AT THE SAME TIME BE NON-TOXIC WHEN TRANSFUSED. IN THIS STUDY, PLATELET CONCENTRATES OBTAINED VIA THE HAEMONETICS MODEL 30 INTERRUPTED FLOW CENTRIFUGE FROM RANDOM NORMAL DONORS WERE CRYOPRESERVED WITH 5% GLYCEROL (V/V FINAL CONCENTRATION), WITHIN TWO HOURS OF COLLECTION, AND WERE STORED IN LIQUID NITROGEN -196 DEG C UNTIL TRANSFUSED. THE FREEZING WAS PERFORMED AT A CONTROLLED RATE OF 10 K/MIN.
