THE CRYOPRESERVATION OF HUMAN PLATELETS WITH GLYCEROL: A METHOD SUITABLE FOR CLINICAL USE.

Type of article: Article

Summary

PREVIOUS WORK SHOWED THAT PLATELETS CAN BE PRESERVED IN THE PRESENCE OF 0.5 M GLYCEROL: PLATELETS WERE FROZEN IN 2 MILLIL POLYPROPYLENE VIALS AND STORED AT 77 K (-196 DEG C). THE STUDY DESCRIBES A MODIFICATION OF THAT TECHNIQUE IN WHICH THE VOLUME OF PRESERVED PLATELET CONCENTRATE, THE CONTAINERS USED AND THE TEMPERATURE OF STORAGE ARE MORE SUITABLE FOR CLINICAL USE. GLYCEROLIZED PLATELET SUSPENSION WAS FROZEN IN STANDARD POLYVINYLCHLORIDE BLOOD BAGS AND STORED AT 193 K (-80 DEG C). NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE COULD BE FOUND BETWEEN THE PROCEDURES.
