Summary

CELL SUSPENSIONS WERE COOLED SLOWLY AS 50 MICROL DROPLETS USING DMSO AS PROTECTANT. THE FROZEN DROPLETS WERE FOUND TO BE A CONVENIENT METHOD FOR STORING LARGE NUMBERS OF HEPATOCYTES WHILST ALLOWING GREAT FLEXIBILITY IN THE NUMBER RECOVERED AT ANY ONE TIME FOR EXPERIMENTATION. METABOLIC ACTIVITY OF CELLS STORED AT 77 K (-196 DEG C) AS PELLETS WAS SIMILAR TO THAT SEEN IN HEPATOCYTES CRYOPRESERVED IN CONVENTIONAL GLASS AMPOULES.
