Summary

CELLS FROZEN WITH THE CRYOPROTECTANT DMSO ARE SUBJECTED DURING FREEZING TO VERY HIGH AND POTENTIALLY TOXIC CONCENTRATIONS OF THIS ADDITIVE. THE ADDITION OF THE CRYOPROTECTANT TOXICITY NEUTRALIZERS, UREA, FORMAMIDE, OR ACETAMIDE BEFORE FREEZING SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCES THE DAMAGE OBSERVED AFTER THAWING. BY USING BOTH ACETAMIDE AND A TWO-STAGE COOLING PROTOCOL, IT HAS BEEN POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN SUBSTANTIAL RECOVERY OF RENAL TISSUE FROZEN TO LIQUID NITROGEN TEMPERATURE.
