Dealing with some numerical instabilities in reciprocating compressor simulation program.

Author(s) : ZELEK G., CYKLIS P.

Summary

The paper deals with a problem of numerical instabilities that can be observed in the results of the simulation of compression process in a cylinder of a reciprocating compressor. Especially in case of very efficient valves and low pressure difference across the valve, the simulation may result in a non-physical scattering of mass exchange or pressure traces. The aim of this paper is to identify the origin of those instabilities. Also a short discussion on its eventual consequences is provided along with possible precautions that can be taken to mitigate the problem.
