Summary
THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS THE PURPOSE OF THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE LAYER AND ITS DESTRUCTION BY CFCS AND HALONS. SOME DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE GROWTH OF OZONE HOLES OVER THE POLES AND THEIR EFFECT ON MANKIND. THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL IS AIMED AT PHASING OUT HARMFUL GASES. ITS MAIN POINTS ARE DESCRIBED.
