Summary

POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE APPEARS TO BE THE BEST PURIFYING AGENT FOR ETHYLENE IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE COLD STORES. A WASHING TOWER USING A POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE AND WATER SOLUTION ENABLES ONE TO REMOVE NOT ONLY THE ETHYLENE, BUT ALSO OTHER VOLATILE COMPOUNDS DETRIMENTAL TO FRUIT AND VEGETABLES E.G. ALCOHOLS, ESTERS, ALDEHYDES. DEHYDRATION OF PRODUCTS IS ALSO REDUCED, BECAUSE OF THE HIGH RELATIVE HUMIDITY PROVIDED BY THE AIR WASHER. RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR A TEST SERIES WITH A 100 M3 AIRTIGHT ROOM AND PROTOTYPE WASHING TOWER. E. F.
