Design and operation of an office liquid nitrogen generator.

Author(s) : LITTLE W. A.

Summary

The author describes the design and operation of an office liquid nitrogen generator for the dermatology market. This market requires a low-cost, highly reliable, zero maintenance cryogenic system, with production of liquid nitrogen free of oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture, and safe operation. A single-stream, mixed refrigerant, throttle-expansion refrigeration system provides the cooling. An oil-free compressor supplies compressed air, dried and cleansed of carbon dioxide by a pressure-swing-absorber, and freed of oxygen by a membrane filter. The remaining 99.5% pure nitrogen is liquefied and can be dispensed only to a dewar that responds to a radio frequency interrogation signal.
