Summary

While Japan remains by far the largest import market on the Pacific Rim, China is the fastest growing. Europeans worry about late plantings and poor yields this year. US production is seemingly slipping, with Canada stepping in to fill the breach. US French fry exports for the marketing year 1996/97 (July-June) reached a record 385,700 metric tons and USD 286 millions, up 10 and 12%, respectively for the year, nearly double the volume and more than twice the value of just five years ago.
