Development and testing of a demountable cryocooler thermal interface.

Summary

Program goals include the requirement that the magnet be conduction cooled (no liquid cryogens allowed), and the coolers be replaceable without warming the magnet. Two Leybold Gifford-McMahon 4.2 K cryocoolers are incorporated into the magnet cryostat. Each Gifford-McMahon is separated from the magnet insulating vacuum by a cold sleeve. The interface between the Gifford-McMahon cooler 2nd stage and the cold sleeve is of particular interest as it must be of high thermal conductance and present a low parasitic heat load to the 2nd stage of the cooler.
