Summary
The drying process is widely used in the heavy and light and food industries. This process is classified as a representative high energy consumption and high carbon emission process due to its use of a fossil fuel boiler. Therefore, the industry is paying attention to alternative technology for the use of industrial boiler. The heat pump is one of the alternative technologies for the reduction of the use of fossil fuel and the emission of carbon gas for the operation of the drying process. In this study, the hybrid hot air-freeze dryer system with a heat pump was developed to reproduce the traditional drying process of South Korea namely, Dong-Geon method. The Dong-Geon method brings out the taste and flavor ingredients as the hot air-drying process and the freeze-drying process are repeatedly performed. To develop the hybrid hot air- freeze dryer system with a heat pump, the schematic diagram of the conventional heat pump in a hybrid hot air-freeze dryer was re-designed. The developed system can reduce the time to reach the target temperature in the dryer for hot air-drying and freeze-drying processes and can operate the two different drying processes in one dryer. The comprehensive studies such as system design for dryer, cycle design for heat pump, etc., was conducted in real. In addition, the time to reach the target temperature of inner dryer which has 15.8 m3 of volume space was measured. The time to reach the target temperature of the inner dryer was around 13 minutes from 0 ºC to 25 ºC. And the time to reach the target temperature of inner dryer was around 12.6 minutes from 25 ºC to -5 ºC.
