Development of zone air-conditioning system for factories using air curtains.

Summary

In a large factory, the working environment in summer tends to deteriorate as a result of increasing air conditioning load and there is a demand to improve the working environment with small energy consumptions.  We investigated the “zone air-conditioning system”, in which the working area was surrounded by airflows of air curtains and air conditioning was performed intensively in it.  At first, we conducted experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of this system.  The “zone” was a space with W×D×H = 5m×5m×3m, and air curtains were installed along the perimeter of the top panel.  It was confirmed that the working area could be zoned by air curtains, and the thermal environment in it could be improved in comparison with the case without air curtains.  Next, based on CFD analyses, detailed temperature distributions in the zone were clarified, and the optimum operating condition of the air curtain was examined.
