Effect of conical-ring inserts on heat transfer in a tube.

Summary

Effects of the conical-ring insertion on heat transfer and flow friction characteristics in a uniform heat flux tube have been studied experimentally. In the experiments, the turbulent flow was introduced by using conical-ring placed inside the inner test tube of the heat exchanger with different diameter ratios, DR= d/D= 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. The experimental results revealed that the increase in heat transfer rate of the conical-ring inserts is found to be strongly influenced by vortex motion. Over the range investigated, the mean Nusselt numbers for using the enhancement devices with DR= 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7, are 297, 238 and 191%, respectively, higher than that for the plain tube. In addition, the influences of the conical-ring on the flow friction and enhancement efficiency are also investigated.
