Summary

Optimal cryoprotection conditions for Plasmodium berghei, a parasitic malaria strain found in mice, were investigated. About 90% cell survival was obtained with continuous slow cooling of 1 deg C/minute from 20 to 0 deg C and 3 deg C/minute to -40 deg C followed by immersion in liquid nitrogen with some combinations of DMSO, L-glutamine and sorbitol in RPMI 1640 medium and fast thawing at 35 deg C.
