Effect of pre- and postharvest applications of 'Biofresh' coating on keepability of apple fruits.

Author(s) : XUAN H., STREIF J.

Summary

Apple cultivars Elstar and Shampion were sprayed a day before picking or dipped in 1% Biofresh (a sucrose fatty acid ester) for 20 seconds and kept in cold storage for 3 months. The ground colour of apple fruit peel, flesh firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, weight loss, CO2 and ethylene production, and gas diffusion in apple tissue were determined. Dipped fruits were firmer and exhibited better retention of titratable acidity as well as reduction in respiration compared to the sprayed and untreated fruits.
