EFFECTS OF COLD TREATMENTS IN INCREASING THE PRODUCTION AND STORAGE OF CHICORY.

ROLE DU FROID POUR AMELIORER LA PRODUCTION ET LA CONSERVATION DE L'ENDIVE.

Summary

LOW TEMPERATURE APPLICATION TO IMMATURE ROOTS BEFORE FORCING ACCELERATES THE WHOLE MATURITY PROCESS. FOR MATURE ROOTS HARVESTED AT A NORMAL DATE, PROLONGED COLD STORAGE, POSSIBLY ASSOCIATED WITH CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE, IS ABLE TO STABILIZE GREATLY THE GROWTH POTENTIAL AND EXTEND THE PRODUCTION PERIOD OF CHICONS. BUT AT THE END OF THIS PERIOD, THE BUDS REACH A PREFLORAL STAGE CORRELATED CLOSELY WITH THE ROOT SENESCENCE EVOLUTION. CONCERNING THE STORAGE ABILITY OF CHICONS, NORMAL REFRIGERATION IN AIR SEEMS TO HAVE AN OPTIMAL EFFECT, BECAUSE OF THE CO2 SENSIBILITY OF LEAVES EXPRESSED IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CONDITIONS.
