Effects of Ni, Si and Cr doping on the magnetic refrigerant metal Gd.

Summary
The structure, mechanical properties and magnetocaloric properties for the magnetic refrigerant metal Gd with Ni, Si or Cr doping are discussed in this paper. Gd(1-x)Ni(x), Gd(1-x)Six and Gd(1-x)Cr(x) (x= 0-0.09) alloys were synthesized by argon arc-melting, followed by homogenization annealing. The small amount of Ni, Si or Cr doping does not change the hexagonal crystal structure of the metal Gd, except the appearance of Gd3Ni and Gd5Si3 in the Gd(1-x)Ni(x) and Gd(1-x)Si(x) alloys, respectively. Ni, Si or Cr doping was found to play an important role in strengthening metal Gd, verified by significantly increased micro-hardness. The doping element contents up to 0.07 or 0.09 at.% have no significant effect on the Curie temperatures of these alloys. The maximum magnetic entropy changes of Gd(1-x)Ni(x) and Gd(1-x)Si(x) decrease slightly with increasing Ni and Si content, respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy changes of Gd(1-x)Cr(x) with various Cr doping are almost the same as pure Gd. Excellent magnetocaloric properties comparable to metal Gd were obtained in these alloys.
