Effects of postharvest handling and cultivars on keeping quality of onions (Allium cepa L.) in storage.

Summary

The effect of postharvest handling on storage of 5 onion cultivars was evaluated over a 5-year period in trials carried out in Hungary and the Netherlands. Early harvesting improved the storability of onions which more than compensated for the loss in yield. Cutting off the tops before they were completely dry reduced the number of healthy bulbs in storage. Artificial drying in heated air was beneficial only if the bulbs had become wet during field curing. Scales played a determining role. Bulbs remained dormant longest when stored at low (5 deg C) or high (25 deg C) temperatures.
