Summary

In this paper, the leakage characteristics of a labyrinth piston compressor was numerically investigated, when the structure of the labyrinth cavities changed. A static CFD model was established at first, then, an experimental rig was built to validate the correctness of the CFD models, and the data obtained from the experiments showed good agreement with that of the simulation results. The distribution of the pressure, temperature and gas velocity field in the labyrinth seal indicated that from the inlet side to the outlet side, the sealing effect was becoming more and more obvious. Finally, the effects of the width, depth, the thickness of the labyrinth cavities and the clearance of the seal on the leakage characteristics were discussed in detail. It has been found that it would be preferable if / w d , the ratio of cavity width to labyrinth clearance, was controlled in 8 to 11 while / d / d , the ratio of cavity depth to labyrinth clearance, was bigger than 2.7. The results of this study would provide a basis for designing and
optimizing the structure of labyrinth seal in the labyrinth reciprocating compressor.
