Efficiencies of transcritical CO2 cycles with and without an expansion turbine.

Summary

A series of transparencies presents what has been investigated so far to find a suitable application for carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. In addition, two thermodynamic models for transcritical carbon dioxide cycles with and without an expansion turbine have been developed. Both models contain an internal suction-to-gas cooler outlet line heat exchange. The effects of using an expansion turbine and internal heat exchange on overall cycle efficiency will be presented. Furthermore, a second law analysis will be included in order to further explain these effects. Finally the efficiencies of the transcritical carbon dioxide cycles will be compared to the ones of conventional HCFC-22 cycles.
