Summary

A prototype of a cascade refrigeration system with NH3 and CO2 as refrigerants has been designed and built. The prototype is used to supply a 9 kW refrigeration capacity to a horizontal plate freezer at an evaporating temperature of -50°C as design conditions. The prototype includes a specific control system and a data acquisition system. The plate freezer is overfed with CO2 liquid by using an ejector, which also acts as an expansion device and allows the recirculation of the liquid coming from the CO2 gas-liquid separator through the evaporator. An ejector is also used as expansion device and re-circulator of the NH3 into the overfeed cascade heat exchanger (CO2 condenser and NH3 evaporator). The cascade heat exchanger is a compact plate heat exchanger with 50 plates. In the paper, the experimental facility and the data acquisition system are described. Liquid recirculation rates of CO2 and NH3 in the plate freezer and in the cascade heat exchanger were experimentally determined for different operating conditions. The experimental results are shown and discussed.
