Energy and environment: a modern dilemma.

Author(s) : CURIEN H.

Summary

Refrigeration is at present universally used, not only in the laboratories, but in the industrial processes and even at home. Who could live without a refrigerator in the kitchen? Which industry does not use cryotechnical devices? From the space rockets propelled with embarked liquid oxygen and hydrogen to the geant particle colliders requiring superconducting magnets, practically all the most modern scientific and technical tools require cryotechnics. As for all technics, the impact on environment is now questioned. Are the domestic uses reasonably mastered in order to conserve energy? Are the working substances used in refrigeration sufficiently safe, in case of emergencies? Scientists and economists have to answer those questions and find, when necessary, new solutions and new processes.
