Energy conservation in the hotel sector.

Usteda energije u hotelskom sektoru./ Energy conservation in the hotel sector.

Summary

Tourism, and more specifically the hotel sector, is a major contributor to the growth of many national economies. It is also a major source of energy consumption, which reflects in the energy balance of a country and in the balance sheet of a tourism enterprise. The first step in order to tackle this issue is to locate the origins of energy consumption in a hotel and energy audits are the tool to achieve this. This was applied within the framework of a research on the energy behaviour of hotels in the region of Central Macedonia, Greece, which covered more than 140 hotels over a period of four years. This leads to the deduction of specific quantitative parameters, like the number of buildings, beds, nights spent on average, occupation factor etc., and also qualitative parameters like the geographical distribution and operational season. Consequently, followed the selection of a representative number of hotels, which were examined more analytically in order to determine their energy behaviour. In this paper are presented both the methodology applied and the results for one specific hotel.
