Summary
Electrochemical looping heat pump is an emerging HVAC technology that can theoretically achieve higher efficiency using environmentally friendly working fluids compared to conventional vapor compression (J. Kim, Braun, et al., 2023). However, the overall environmental impact and economic feasibility of the ELHP have not been investigated, which is crucial to understanding the future market potential for the system. To address these gaps, a comprehensive study on life-cycle climate performance and A life-cycle economic
evaluation of ELHP, using isopropanol and acetone as the working fluid pair, has been conducted. The outcomes reveal that the ELHP could achieve an expected payback period of under 8 years when compared with high-end heat pump systems, particularly in areas with severe weather conditions. Moreover, uncertainty analysis results demonstrate that the payback period could remain under the 8-year mark under worst case scenarios if the expected costs of ELHP systems are reduced to half of their current estimated values.
