Summary
After prohibiting CFCs and HFCs, the non-ozone depletion HFC R134a was introduced in almost all refrigeration sectors for over 20 years. However, the F-Gas regulation in 2015 (UE nº 517/2014) and later in 2024 (UE nº 573/2024) have forced the scientific community to search for new alternatives for this widespread refrigerant, creating different drop-in substances during the last ten years. Some of them are based on hydrocarbon mixtures with propane (R290), propylene (R1270) and isobutane (R600a), among others, where, depending on the proportions of each one, the resulting mixture can be adapted to the same R134a compressor capacity. This contribution aims to investigate, from an experimental approach, two mixtures of R600a/R290 and R600a/R1270 as potential drop-ins for R134a using a vertical beverage cooler designed for R134a as reference. Using the same R134a compressor and optimizing the mass charge, the results provide energy savings of up to 20.0 and 22.2% by using the mixtures R600a/R290 (53/47%w) and R600a/R1270 (60/40%w), respectively, in climatic class conditions of 25°C and 60% of relative humidity.
