Summary
According to statistics of the US Energy Information Agency, of the 30,900 petajoules of primary energy used to produce electricity in the country in 1992, conversion losses at the plant accounted for 20,300 petajoules or about 66% of the primary energy consumed. Large-scale recovery of this energy through cogeneration, for use in building space conditioning and industrial processes, could have a significant impact on energy consumption in the US.
