Energy use and heat recovery in water-loop heat pump, variable-air-volume (VAV), four-pipe fan coil, and reheat HVAC systems. 2.

Summary

Annual HVAC energy requirements and building COPs for these common HVAC systems were compared for combinations of building size, core-to-perimeter-area ratios, and location. The building COPs decreased by 20 to 30% when a four-pipe fan coil system was used in place of a water-loop heat pump system, by 50 to 60% with a VAV system, and by 70 to 80% with a single-zone reheat system. Glass quantity, building U-factors, and the use of an outside air economizer also affected the annual HVAC energy and building COP values.
