Summary

NOTES THAT MANY OF THE ADVANCES IN ENERGY CONSERVATION DURING THE 1970S AND 1980S WERE DUE TO INCREASED USE OF CFCS. EXAMINES THE IMPACT THAT RESTRICTIONS ON THEIR USE MAY HAVE ON NATIONAL ENERGY USE. DISCUSSES REFRIGERATING EQUIPMENT, BLOWN FOAM INSULATION, REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS AND VENDING MACHINES, CENTRIFUGAL CHILLERS, COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION, AND BUILDING INSULATION. CONCLUDES THAT BECAUSE OF THE HARD WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE, IT APPEARS THAT THE ENERGY-USE IMPACTS OF CFC ALTERNATIVES WILL BE LESS THAN THAT PREDICTED BY THE OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY REPORT OF 1987, AT WHICH TIME DROPS OF 7 TO 8 % IN REFRIGERATION EFFICIENCY AND 10 TO 15 % IN INSULATION U-VALUE WERE REAL POSSIBILITIES.
