Summary

Experimental research was conducted to evaluate the condensation of R422A and R422D refrigerant vapour mixtures on horizontal Cu smooth and 90/10 CuNi Turbo C tubes of 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) nominal outside diameter. The Turbo C tubes have 40 fpi (1575 fpm) on the outer surface and a smooth inner surface. Experiments were carried out at saturation temperatures of 30, 40 and 50°C and wall subcoolings from 0.9 to 29 and 0.8 to 10.5°C for the smooth and Turbo C tubes, respectively. Results clearly show the different behaviour of the mixture during condensation from that of a pure substance. The experimental heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) evidence a great influence of the mixture composition and the outer tube surface geometry on the heat transfer during the condensation process on horizontal tubes. The condensation HTCs of R422A are higher than those of R422D on both the smooth and Turbo C tubes. The enhancement factors provided by the Turbo C tube for R422A are higher than those provided for R422D under most of the experimental conditions considered in the experimental program.
