Enhancement of condensation heat transfer of ammonia on the outside of tubes.

Number: pap. n. 14

Author(s) : SPINDLER K.

Summary

A literature overview on the heat transfer behaviour of condensing ammonia on the outside of different tubes is given. The enhancement of condensation heat transfer is mainly addressed. The influence of surface geometry (smooth, polished, rough, finned) and tube material is discussed. The results of ammonia vapour condensing on smooth and fluted aluminium tubes are presented for different tube orientations. New experimental results of ammonia condensation on smooth tubes, integral-fin titanium tubes and spirally corrugated tubes are shown. The enhancement factor provided by the integral-fin tube ranges from 0.77 to 1.22. The overall heat transfer of the corrugated tube is increased compared to the smooth tube, whereas the condensation heat transfer on the tube outside is close to that of a smooth tube. The enhancement of heat transfer in condensation of ammonia vapour on single tubes with helically wound wires and on a tube bundle is presented. The heat transfer during condensation of pure ammonia vapour is compared with the Nusselt film theory. Experimental results and prediction methods are presented in the literature overview.
