Summary

This paper studies the effect of adding phase change material (PCM) slabs on the outside face of a refrigerated locker evaporator. A three-dimensional (3D) model was developed in ANSYS FLUENT to investigate the performance of refrigerated locker. The holding time and the temperature distribution of refrigerated locker with PCM slabs were investigated. The results indicate that the energy stored in the PCM is released to the storage compartment during the off-cycle and facilitates continuous operation for several hours without power supply. The holding time of the refrigerated locker with PCM slabs increased by 586.79% as compared to that of the refrigerated locker without PCM slabs when no power was provided. The addition of PCM slabs led to a noticeable reduction in the temperature gradient within the refrigerated locker, ensuring better conservation conditions.
