Summary

This communication deals with different detection systems for verocytotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) strains. The methods are divided into phenotypical and genotypical detection systems. For the present it seems to be necessary to establish a VT-screening method. Before screening, an enrichment step is imperative. Subsequent to detection, VTEC have to be isolated and differentiated. Virulence factors can be determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results by PCR are available within a few hours.
