Environmentally benign air cycle heat pumps and refrigeration systems.

Summary

The air cycle is a heat pump or refrigeration cycle using air as refrigerant. The use of air as a refrigerant is based on the principle that when a gas expands isentropically, its final temperature at the new pressure is much lower and can be used for cooling purposes. Conversely, when air is compressed isentropically, its temperature increases. The air cycle concept can be used as an open or a closed cycle. Air cycles can be used in most of the refrigeration and heating applications, such as building heat pumps and air conditioning systems and industrial refrigeration systems.
