Summary
When oil or gas wells are drilled in permafrost, the relatively high temperature of the bore can cause long term thawing of surrounding permafrost creating settlement problems. An insulation layer can be included, but eventually the radius of thawing may increase. An equation has been developed to calculate the thawing time. This includes a dimensionless function connected with the radius of thawing, a table for which is given, along with a worked example. D.W.H.
