European perspective on Listeria monocytogenes.

Summary
The author reviews the European approach to the control of Listeria monocytogenes and notes the absence of a common EEC strategy. The Milk Hygiene Directive and the newly published Food Hygiene Directive which focusses on the hazard analysis critical control point concept are the only existing criteria. A quantitative approach for drafting suitable criteria is advocated and details are given of the German approach to this subject. It is concluded that a quantitative approach based on the German model is viable and specific reductions in contamination levels are advocated. G.R.S.
