Summary

Among 107 isolates of epiphytic bacteria originating from apple leaves cv. Idared, 13 inhibited in vitro growth of Botrytis cinerea and 13 of Penicillium expansum, but only 6 of them inhibited growth of both pathogens. Most of the isolates that showed in vitro antifungal activity were not active in vivo. On the other hand, several of the isolates that were not active in vitro provided good protection of stored apples. Two isolates protected apples stored at 20 deg C but not at 4 deg C. Eight isolates representing different morphological groups effectively controlled both grey and blue moulds on apples stored at 4 deg C.
