Evaluation of the influence of the charge variation in the performance of an air-to-water heat pump working with R290.

Summary

The refrigerant charge has not been a very common design parameter in heat pumps until recently, with the use of flammable refrigerants. In previous studies, the most common way to consider that parameter has been based on the minimization of the internal volumes and the possible influence in COP, but other aspects remain still unexplored. In this paper, the performance of variable-speed air-to-water heat pumps working in different conditions as a function of the refrigerant charge has been analyzed in heating and cooling modes. Based on that analysis, the optimum charge of the system, the potential benefits/penalties of the heat pump derived from not using a liquid receiver, and the system's sensitivity to the amount of charge have been determined. From those results, the dependence of COP of this kind of system on the charge has been low even with the presented fluctuations in that value.
