Coupling effects in fault detection and diagnosis for variable speed air-to-water propane heat pump with subcooling control.

Summary
There is a growing concern about soft faults in heat pumps, which could cause failure but also reduce their efficiency. It is essential to detect them early and maintain the system properly before they become critical faults. Besides, if the refrigerant is flammable such as propane (R290), it is critical to observe if the system is undercharged to detect possible leaks. This fault may appear individually or simultaneously with other faults in the heat pump, which may cause cross-effects in some system variables. In this work, it is analyzed the influence of improper refrigerant charge and heat exchanger fouling, individually and simultaneously, in a reversible air-to-water heat pump with a liquid receiver at the evaporator outlet and subcooling control. From the performed analysis, a map of coupling effects has been determined, and a methodology of Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) has been proposed, considering the variable-speed compressor that the system has.
