Summary

Two sets of experiments were conducted during 1995-1996 to determine the suitable packing material for storing hybrid "Hema" cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) under cold storage conditions. Freshly harvested green cabbages were packed in gunny bags, bamboo baskets, and polythene bags (transparent). Cabbage heads were stacked open (without packaging) during cold storage (average temperature and humidity of 3.5 °C and 76%, respectively) for a minimum period of 50 days. Considering weight loss and retention of original colour, the gunny bag may be considered as the best packaging material for storing cabbages under cold storage conditions for a short period.
