Summary

TEMPERATURE CHANGE, SHRINKAGE (LIVE WEIGHT LOSS), AND MORTALITY DATA WERE COLLECTED ON TRAILERLOADS OF LIVE BROILERS HELD IN THE EVAPORATIVELY COOLED BAYS AND IN TWO CONVENTIONAL, FAN-VENTILATED BAYS. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS INDICATED SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER SHRINKAGE AND LOWER MORTALITY (P LOWER THAN 10) IN THE BROILERS HELD IN THE EVAPORATIVELY COOLED BAYS (SHRINKAGE 2.6% ; MORTALITY 2%) THAN IN THOSE HELD IN THE FAN-VENTILATED BAYS (SHRINKAGE 3. 4% ; MORTALITY 3%).
