Summary

The heat transfer performance of the working fluid both in the evaporator and in the condenser plays an important role in the energy efficiency of vapour compression refrigerating equipment and heat pumps. With respect to condensation heat transfer inside plain tubes, it is shown how a Penalty Factor can be associated with any refrigerant as an immediate evaluation criterion of its potential heat transfer performance in condensers. A ranking of the different working fluids in this respect can be established. Furthermore, it is shown how the Penalty Factor can be used for the optimization of condenser circuitry under specified design constraints.
